What does Root Canal Treatment involve?

Root canal treatment is often prescribed for patients suffering from a dying or dead nerve in one or more of their teeth. The primary causes of nerve death are decay and trauma. For example, if a tooth has a large cavity, the nerve inside the tooth becomes infected. Then it is necessary to remove that nerve and replace it with a rubber-based material that will keep the infection out.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Tooth decay is a common problem among both children and adults. This problem primarily arises out of inadequate oral hygiene practices. If the decaying tooth is left untreated, chances are that the harmful bacteria will infect the tooth root or the dental pulp inside the tooth. Once the inner nerve of the tooth is infected, it is very difficult for the nerve to recover on its own.

Why Would I Need A Root Canal Procedure?

Although most people have heard of root canals, many do not understand the actual process and reasons for needing one.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Root canal treatment is needed for two main reasons. The first is infection. An untreated cavity is a common cause of pulp infection. The decay erodes the enamel and dentin of the tooth until it reaches the root canal. This allows bacteria to infect the pulp. Antibiotics can't get to infections inside teeth. The inflammation caused by the infection reduces the blood supply to the tooth. The reduced blood supply also keeps the pulp from healing.
