US Election Time

Well its here at last. In a few hours the Americans will vote in the presidential election. All the indications are that it is a dead heat. There is a chance that it will work out to be slightly less close than the polls show due to their margin of error. If however it is as close as is suggested we could very well be on for a re-run of 2000 and who wants that. The BBC News at 10 and consquently

Do You Still Believe in Blair ?

A program on BBC2 last night entitled "Do You Still Believe in Blair ?". It interviewed many of those so called "celebrities" that he had mated up with so convincingly in the past. Most of them were of course now all lining up to be the first to disown brand Blair claiming they felt "let down". Just a week ago we had Greg Dyke doing something similar. Poor souls.

True believers should not be afraid to criticise Europe

Fine article in the Independent yesterday by Nick Clegg prospective parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Hallam. He put forward the argument that one can be pro European but allow themselves to criticise certain aspects of the EU. This has always stuck me about the European debate here in the UK. Because the debate is so heated and so polarizing one tends to find that to enter the debate one has

George Monbiot website

I have recently discovered http://www.monbiot.com. A website belonging to the author of Captive State and other books. It contains plenty of interesting and thought provoking articles of his from the last 10 years or so. I would highly recommend giving it a go.

Remember remember the 5th of November Part 2

Following on from last weeks story that a firework display to commemorate the Gundpowder Plot planned for outside of Parliament had been rejected for fear of causing offence. One Sunday rag I read this morning had two letters from Catholics both dismayed at the rejection and both commenting that they had never ever known a catholic to get offended by the traditional celebrations. So there we

Ryder Cup Addict

Every two years in September i find myself becoming hopelessly addicted to watching golf. Not just any golf though no no this is the Ryder Cup...for some reason that makes all the difference. I don't watch golf at any other time and hardly ever play - maybe two rounds in as many years. I think its something to do with the fact that the golfers are playing in teams, it seems more exciting that way

PHP 5

Having not done anything in PHP for about a year (Java for uni taking up most of my time) i have only just started looking at PHP 5. Im amazed by SQLLite the embedded database engine. I also like the look of the improved XML support, particularly the DOM API.

Newsflash : Blair in quit shock

Once again the papers are full of stories detailing just how close Anthony Blair came to walking out of No 10 and the consequent state of the Blair/Brown relationship. Doesn't all this get a bit boring after a while ? Does anyone outside of the Westminster village care very much about the Blair/Brown feud ? John Prescott acting as peacemaker hosting dinners at his London flat, deals struck at

Prime Ministers Questions

What a charade this event has become. Is it actually worth the parliamentary time anymore ? I enjoy watching The Daily Politics on BBC2 when im at home during the day but that half an hour slot that they use to show PMQ's is hardly worth bothering with. A good chance to go grab some lunch normally.

Champions League

So the Champions League got underway for a new season last night. Being a Chelsea supporter im delighted with their 0-3 victory over Paris St-Germain in Paris. Im hoping the two goals for Didier Drogba will set him off on the right foot for a barrel full of goals this season. Good to see Peter Osgood on You're on Sky Sports last night as well. Shame those horrible gooners won but you can't

Giving up the car

I’m giving up driving a car. I plan to walk where possible and use the train or bus wherever else i need to go. We will never be able to build as many roads as we need. At some point we have to say enough is enough. Either that or we need to learn to accept the increased noise, pollution, road rage, concrete and the decrease in quality of life, breathable air and countryside. I know which i

A weekend of refereeing madness

Is it really possible for the season to have already seen so many odd refing decisions. If it wasn't bad enough to see Andy D'Urso issue two yellow cards to Barry Ferguson yet forget to send him off a few weeks back we now have Mark Halsey appearing to bow to player reaction and change his mind of a penalty decision this weekend. The very same weekend that saw a further three legitimate penalty

Fox Hunting

The government looks set to push through the hunting bill by using the Parliament Act if necessary. This act is supposed to be used for fundamental situations of national importance. Can anyone seriously suggest that fox hunting meets these criteria ? I have no vested interest in fox hunting. I have never been on a hunt, I have no interest in doing so. I don't know anybody who hunts, I have

Rights and Responsibilities

Third way thinkers like to talk a lot about rights and responsibilities. In fact Anthony Blair did as much recently when dismissing the liberal agenda of the 60's. The opinion seems to be that much of the socialist or social democratic thinking of the past thought only of rights and not enough of responsibility. Certainly this seems to be the case when one considers that type of person that occur

Remember remember the 5th of November

Article in the news today that the House of Commons commission has rejected the offer of a free firework display outside Parliament next year to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the gunpowder plot. Predictably the reason for the refusal seems to be fear of causing offence and "sensitivities". Who exactly is going to be offended by such an event ? Every year children celebrate the night
