Historic Sites in Frederick

Some pictures of Historic places in Frederick Maryland:   The Old Court House  -  This is the third Court house built in Frederick, built in1862 after the burning of the previous court house in 1861, during which time the Maryland legislature debated secession. There is a lot of mystery behind the burning, some suspected arson to keep the legislature from voting to seceed.  The first court house was begun in 1750 and was built of wood; It had to be replaced in 1785. At this site in 1765, Frederick citizens burned effigies of government officials in protest of the Stamp Act.  Frederick County History Museum located at 24 E. Church Street in Frederick. Schifferstadt Museum possibly the oldest home in Frederick Maryland. Built about 1758, by German settler Joseph Brunner on 303 acres Roger Brooke Taney House built in the 1790's, a property owned by former Frederick attorney and fifth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Roger Brooke Taney, whose wife was Anne Key (sister of Francis Scott Key) .

Price         $265,700         $283,600      -6% Median Price   $252,500   $250,000     +1% DOM     106     86     +23% # homes sold     183     176      +4% New Listings:   271 Total Marked Contract:   107 Total Marked Contingent:   130 Total Pending (contract + contingent)   237 Notes:  There are currently 1197 listings for sale in Frederick County.  That makes roughly a 5-6 month inventory, a balanced market.      15% of sales were cash deals, reflecting mostly investors.   The inventory is shrinking, the number of sales is steady, causing a more stable market than we’ve seen in the past, in spite of the number of distressed sales on the market. *Other notable sales statistics: Sellers got 91% of list price on average, compared to 92% at this same time last year. We’re seeing the market stabilize. From a historical view, we're seeing an end of the year-over-year decline in average and median sold prices in Frederick County. Photos of Cunningham Falls in Thurmont Maryland

Cunningham Falls on a beautiful Fall Day. Northern Frederick County has some lovely scenery. Cunningham Falls State Park is named for the 78-foot waterfall, the largest in the State of Maryland. The falls, locally known as McAfee Falls, can be accessed via a short trail from the lake area or a boardwalk from Route 77 that accommodates visitors with mobility impairments. A local artist paints the falls. Before the first Europeans arrived, many Native American tribes hunted and fished the area of Cunningham Falls State Park. Tradition says the name "Catoctin" came from a tribe, the Kittoctons, who once lived at the foot of the mountains near the Potomac River. Early settlers used timber from the forests to make charcoal to fuel the Catoctin Iron Furnace. Carroll Creek Linear Park

Carroll Creek Linear Park was 30+ years in the making, from the dream to the grand opening in 2006.  After the streets of Frederick were flooded from Hurricanes in 1972 and 1976, the Carroll Creek Commission began studying and planning the massive $10.7 million project. Construction began in April 2005 and was completed in June 2006. Carroll Creek Promenade Frederick’s Carroll Creek Linear Park is a 1.3-mile chanelled waterway, beginning in Baker Park and ending at E. Patrick Street. It includes several scenic pedestrian bridges, a 400-seat amphitheater and, many container gardens and fountains. The garden outside the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center is a lovely site with sculptures and flowers. I've seen a few outdoor weddings there over the last few years. Situated between the building and the Carroll Creek Park, it's a nice location.

Pictures From Artomatic@Frederick

Artomatic@Frederick is a huge display of the work of over 300 local and regional artists in downtown Frederick. The display will be open for 5 weeks and is located in the old Frederick County School Board offices at 115 E. Church Street in the Historic District. There will be several performances of live music throughout the venue.      The artwork ranged from the whimsical to the sublime and included sculpture, pottery, quilting, mixed media, oil, chalk, watercolor, and photography, and much more.

Here is a snapshot of real estate sales in Frederick County for August: County-wide    2011      2010  % Change Avg. Price $266,800   $267,900     -0% ~ M-Over-Month $266,800   $261,000     +2%  ↑ Median Price $233,000   $237,900     -2% ↓ M-Over-Month  $233,000   $235,000     -1% ~ DOM 98   93     +5% ↑ # homes sold 227   227       ~ M-Over-Month 227   221     +3% ↑ Total Listings 1244   1734     -28% ↓ Inventory 5-6 mos.   8-9 mos.       ↓ Pending Sales 261   221       ↑ Sale Price as % of List Price 93%   93%       ~ What’s Notable:   Cash deals were 14% of the sales last month and continue to be higher than a normal market (7-9%) This is reflective of more investors in the market, and makes me ask, what do they believe about real estate prices? The inventory is shrinking, which is usual for this time of year, but has been decreasing throughout the entire year. Normal market forces of supply and demand will contribute to a more stable market. Rock The Need Charity Event in Frederick Md ~ September 17

The second annual "Rock the Need" will take place in Frederick Md at the Westview Promenade on September 17, from 2pm to 8 pm. The event will benefit Goodwill Industries (bring lightly used clothing to donate), the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs (bring personal hygiene items), and Hope Alive (bring canned foods and non-bleach cleaning items).  The Music starts at 2 pm, the Fashion Show is from 6:30 to 7 pm.  See you there!

"Dog Days" Photos in Frederick Maryland

First Saturday in August Celebrates "Dog Days" in Downtown Frederick. The furry family members are welcome downtown and fundraisers for the Frederick County Humane Society will be taking place all month long. Frances Scott Key Hotel

Early in the 20th century, The Francis Scott Key Hotel was built on the corner of Court Street and West Patrick Street. It was a grand, five-story brick structure with a candy store and news stand on the first floor. Today the hotel is  refurbished apartment building with 46 updated modern residences.  On the first floor and lower levels there are several businesses and offices, including a coffee shop and the MET, The Maryland Ensemble Theater.   See the full gallery on Posterous

We’re seeing the market stabilize.   The number of days from contract to close has remained close to 100 to 110 because of the number of short sales, which tend to take 90 days or more. Angels in the Architectue - Murals of Downtown Frederick

William Cochran, the painter responsible for the Community Bridge on Carroll Creek, has also painted several murals in downtown Frederick, the series is called "Angels in the Architecture"   This mural is painted on the side of the building where Griff's Landing is located.   This mural is titled "Earthbound"
