Iqtidar Javed’s New Masterpiece In Urdu!

Urdu has seen many extra ordinary gems in its history. These people have no comparison with other language poets. Ahmed Faraz, Jalib, Johan Elia and other poets made their places in history and left the world. Though they have left us, still their poetry lives in the hearts of poetry lovers. Iqtidar Javed is a poet of the current age. He has come up with a new book, “Mein Saans Torta Hua”. Reading his poetry one finds him / her in a complete phase of trance. He writes mostly in a Nazm or Nasr format. Urdu Language Through Conflicts

Language is medium of communication for all users. Every language moves through different phases to make it self-innovative and comprehensive for its users. Language helps its users to preserve their identity across the world. European, Malaysian, Chinese all are renowned for their languages. Urdu is a national language of Pakistan and official language in few parts of India. Unfortunately since the evolution of Urdu language, it has been exploited for political and personal gains. Through all conflicts it has managed to keep its versatility and beauty of words, simple structure and soft accent with the speakers. Whenever, Urdu has faced a hard time its users have come up to work for its betterment and development. Amjad Islam Amjad: Taking on Urdu in India!

Amjad Islam Amjad is a great name in Urdu literature. He is s renowned poet and a notorious dramatist from Pakistan. Hindi And Urdu Movements In The Subcontinent!

It was in the 17th century that the Hindus in some provinces of India demanded that Hindi be made the official language of the country instead of Urdu. Babu Shiva Prasad was one of the proponents of the Nagri script in India. He presented a memorandum blaming the earlier rulers of India, who made them learn Persian. There were number of other Hindi movements in the 19th and 20th century. The proponents of Hindi were of the view that Hindi is a commonly spoken, written, and understood language in India and so, it should replace Urdu, which was written in Persian script. They also argue that the Urdu script was making things more complicated. Urdu speakers also set few Urdu bodies to face these controversies. Anjuman-e-Tarakkiye Urdu was formed for this reason. Advocates of the Urdu, language argues that Urdu scripts could be written faster and that Hindi lacks standardized vocabulary. This was true, they also argued that Urdu was originated in India only and it was the language, which was popularly spoken and understood in India.The tussle that started there continues until today. However, both the languages are used in different countries. Urdu has become the official language of Pakistan, while Hindi is the official language of India, yet the tussle through media continues. Urdu is spoken in many areas of India, and enjoys the label of being of India’s provincial languages. These languages share a degree of commonness and thus, they often mixed with each other.

Urdu: An Aristocratic Language

Urdu in its unofficial and informal register has been referred to as “Rekhta”, which means roughly mixed. The formal and official register of the Urdu language is, many times, referred to as “Zaban-e-Urdu-e-Moalla”, which refers to the language of glorious camp. The etymologies of the words of the Urdu language actually decide how polite or refined the speech of the person is. The language is cosmic in nature and therefore, you may find more than one word, for a single entity. This difference has also emerged as a result of the gigantic difference in origins of the language, since the language enjoys different genesis like Persian, Dehalvi and Arabic. The levels of formality of the language are determined on the basis of the origin of the language. Urdu short story: Yesterday, today and tomorrow

The Session on Urdu short stories was one of the finest the Karachi Literature Festival had to offer, for two reasons. One is, the well-moderated discussion actually revolved around literary debates rather than fundamentalism and politics with the panelists sticking to the assigned topic. And the other and second reason is that, the panel included some of the best known writers of the Urdu world namely Fehmida Riaz, Intezar Hussain and Hassan Manzar, with writer Asif Farrukhi, editor of the literary journal Dunyazad, and co-organizer of the festival, moderating. The past and literature’s relation to a culture’s history was what Hussain focused of his discussion. He showed some trends which are used in Urdu story writing to the progressive writer’s movement and modernism. Riaz said that many new writers had emerged in Aaj and Dunyazad. She mentioned Ali Akbar Natiq among others and lamented that people sidelined good writers and appreciated second-rate ones. Hussain continued by pointing out that the feminist movement was one of the biggest movements in current literature. “Having passed through periods of great rebellion, the phase that we have entered… in that great meaning is being born in Urdu short story and verse,” he said.

Contemporary Growth And Development In Urdu

The word “Urdu” is basically originated from Turkish word “Ordu” meaning “an army”, “a camp”, or “a legion”; justifying its multicultural and diverse origins, can truly be regarded as a living language still undergoing changes and expanding its bases to new horizons. It is a fine amalgam of three culturally and orally very rich and diverse languages, i.e. Turkish, Arabic and Persian, three of the languages with very rich culture and history harmonizing with each other to develop and originate a new language called “Urdu”. So, we can say that it is the nature of this language to engulf any convenient elements of other languages and fit them in like its own indigenous elements. Though, it has changed and evolved a great deal all through its history, now spanned well over some 900 years, Roman Urdu is one such recent example of how it expands itself. It is basically the name given to the trend and practice of writing words of Urdu with Roman alphabets. As is this common with majority of changes, they are not conveniently welcomed by the convention lovers; so is the case with this instance as well. The advent and propagation of this new found trend is not embraced with open hearts and minds by convention lovers and many acclaimed scholars claim that majority of “Arabic Script” lovers of the language find it quite offending to them and language. As a matter of fact, the advent of Roman Urdu has been made possible with the advances in Information Technology and other contemporary technological developments, and it is most widely used in text messages over cell phones or in the form of “chatting” through internet. The fact of the matter is that with the passage of time this new found innovation is making its mark on the language itself, and perhaps to the good of it.

First appearance of Urdu & Arabic courses

In Indra Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) introduced two new programmes in Urdu and Arabic languages. Students can get admissions in two sessions January or July. The School of Humanities has launched BA (Elective) programme in Urdu adding to its certificate and diploma programmes while the School of Foreign Languages has launched a certificate programme in Arabic language in the University. The course introduces pronunciation skills, Script writing, communicative Urdu and comprehension of Urdu prose and poetry. Each course has eight credits to improve the communicating, writing, reading and comprehensive skills of students. The maximum duration to complete the diploma programme is three years while the minimum duration is one year. The certificate programme in Arabic language aims at acquainting beginners with the essentials of the Arabic language. In this programme includes four essential components: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This programme provides students to learn simple, friendly and innovative material with audio support. This programme’s syllabus divided into two parts, course one and course two. Course one basis on basics of Arabic language with reading and writing while course two comprises on listening and speaking.

We got no funds to hold meet, says Urdu Academy

Bangalore: World Urdu Conference started on Wednesday to celebrate and discussed about some major issues of Urdu language. Organizers complained the many letters to chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, asking for support to hold the conference, fell on deaf ears. Though the letters were forwarded to the Kannada and culture department from August, the pleas were not recognized by the department. "We had written several times to the CM and the Kannada and culture department, but nobody took any interest. We did not get any financial support either. We had requested for Rs 3.5 crore to organize this international meet. On the contrary, the department decided to dissolve our Academy," said chief patron, All India Urdu Manch, Khaleel Mamoom. The meet saw several Urdu poets from different countries including United Kingdom, Pakistan, Bangladesh and US. Governor H R Bharadwaj appeared in completely different mood on Wednesday and addressed luminaries of Urdu literature and poetry and also told the audience how integral Urdu was to the culture of the country. Former chairman, Sahitya Academy, Gopi Chand Narang also said again that the message of Urdu should reach the people. "We should give the pluralistic message of Urdu to Karnataka. It goes along with Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Rajasthani or Punjabi. We will not allow politicization of language here," he said.

Urdu is a secular language

Bangalore: 29th December 2010, Karnataka Governor H R Bharadwaj recommended religious tolerance between Muslims and Hindus in country because it’ll become an initiative to promote the best relations between India and Pakistan. Urdu ties between two countries strongly.  “The politicization of cultural values like saying Urdu belongs to only a particular community, is misleading,” Mr. Bharadwaj said. Urdu does not have religion or region it is co-existed with other languages like Kannada, Telugu, Kashmiri, Punjabi and Hindi in many states, he added. India was known for promotion of values of Pluralism from times immemorial and will continue to promote Urdu as part of its constitutional duty, Mr. Bharadwaj added. The main purpose of this two-day world conference is to bring Urdu intellectuals, writers and poets on one platform where they’ll share their ideas that how can to promote and protect Urdu language in India and abroad as well. More than 600 delegates including poets from all over the world are taking part of this conference. It will also purposeful for the promotion and protection of Urdu literature and the problems will also be encountered in this conference.

Urdu poet—Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi

Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi (1916-2006) born as Ahmad Shah Awan. He was very famous Pakistani Urdu poet, literary critic, dramatist, and journalist. He was most prominent figure in Urdu literature. His Urdu afsana work is considered by some second only to Premchand in its masterful depiction of rural culture. He graduated from the University of the Punjab, Lahore. He started his career as a Govt. clerk which he eventually left to pursue journalism. In his long career as writer and editor He had several literary Urdu journals including Phool, Tehzeeb-i-Niswan, Adab-i-Lateef, Naqoosh and Savera. In 1962, Qasmi started his own journal Fanoon. The legendary friendship and support of Khadija Mastoor and Hajira Masroor and support to a host of the other writers from Ahmad faraz, Najib Ahmad, Saqi Farooqi and others was linked to Fanoon. Many other famous Urdu writers including Ata ul Haq Qasmi, Munnoo Bhai, Nazeer Naji and Amjad Islam Amjad proudly claim Qasmi’s patronage. Qasmi received Pride of Performance in 1968 and Pakistan Academy Letters lifetime achievement award and country’s highest civil honor, Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1980. His published collections of his best-known work include Urdu poetry volumes Jalal-o-Jamal, Shola-i-Gul and Kisht-i-Wafa. He died on the July 10, 2006.

There are major genres of poetry found in UrduDoha, is self-contained couplet in poetry. Doha is first common in Apabhramsha and was commonly used in Urdu and Hindi poetry. Some Dohas were most famous and those were of Rahim, Tulsidas, Sarahpa, Kabir, Surdas and Jamiluddin Aali.   Fard, It is infact a composition of a single Sher; Shero-Shayari is called Fard. Geet, it is popular composition or song. Ghazal, It is poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets. It is an expressive form of poetry which expresses the feelings of love and pain of loss and separation also. Urdu ghazals are one of the best ways of expressions. Hamd, is a poem in praise of Allah. Hijv, A poem written to condemn or to abuse a person. Kafi, is a classical form of Sufi poetry. Madah, in these poems written in praise of Kings and Patrons. Manqabat, It one more special kind of poems, in which written in praise of Ahle-E-Bait or Sahaba. Masnavi, A long epic poem describing the past events, and the famous masanavis are Shah-Nama of Firdosi, Masnavi-E-Roomi in Persian and Zehar-E-Ishq in Urdu. Na’t, it is written in the praise of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). Who recite the Na’t are known as the Na’t Khuwan or Sana’a Khuwan. World Urdu Conference & Mushaira

Bangalore: World Urdu conference and Mushaira is held on 29, 30 Dec.  Urdu is most poetic language across the world. No doubt, present generation is far away from Urdu, but still they like Urdu poetry as a trend. In Bangalore World Urdu conference is held and many scholars, journalists, writers and other intellectuals from across the country will be addressing this dilemma. Intellectuals from other countries like UK, USA, Pakistan, Canada and Bangladesh are also expected to attend the conference. All members who will be participated in conference, they put together a list of guiding principles that would be implemented to promote Urdu language. The conference is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am at The Capital Hotel, Raj Bhavan Road, Bangalore. The Mushaira is scheduled to begin at 8:30 pm on 30th December in the Shivajinagar Stadium, Bangalore. Some of the prominent Indian poets who would participate in Mushaira are Janab Hassan Kamal and Janab Rahat Indori from Mumbai, Janab Anjum Barabankvi from Bhopal, Janab Sardar Ayagh and Janab Maher Mansoor from Bangalore and many others from different cities of India. Some of poets invited from abroad also. Urdu conference will also clarify that Urdu is not linked to only Muslims. Urdu is one of the official languages of India. A number of papers will be presented in the conference with regard to vast aspects of the language Urdu.

Urdu Shayari

One of the most dominant forms of poetry is Urdu Shayari. Urdu Shayari also known as Urdu Sher O Shayari, It is a varied field of poetry that has many different forms and colors. Every Shair of Urdu Shayari is usually rhymes. It tells all about beauties of life and also describes feelings of love in a beautiful way. Urdu poetry can be traced to the ancient Arabic and Persian forms of poetry. These forms were very popular in kings and Emperors’ times. Urdu Shayari has ability of breathing life into words. The couplets in Urdu can make forget all tensions when one person read or write poetry, can easily forget their tensions and also by poetry love can easily express to another person.Urdu poetry has long history behind it, and still from past it has more importance in human beings life. It is ancient tradition which is influenced by Persian and Arabic. It was much influenced by major Urdu poets of India and basically mixes with Urdu, Hindi and Hindustani. Major cities holding Urdu poetry expositions known as Mushairas. Many people attend these Mushairas to relief their souls and free from stress.

Urdu Poet—Ibn-e-Insha

Ibn-e-Insha (1927-1978) was a prominent Urdu poet, travelogue writer, columnist and humorist. He was known as one of the best humorists of Urdu. His poetry laced with language evocative of Amir Khusro in its use of words. His poetic style is an influence on generation of young poets. The real name of Ibn-e-Insha was Sher Muhammad Khan. He was born in Phillaur tehsil of Jalandhar District, Punjab, India. He did B.A from Punjab University in 1946 and M.A from University of Karachi in 1953. He served UN for some time and this enable him to visit a lot of places including China, Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, India, Afghanistan, Iran, France, Turkey, US, Indonesia and UK. He did work in various Govt. services some of them are Ministry of Culture, Radio Pakistan and National Book Centre of Pakistan. Insha was more versatile poet and writer of his generation. His most famous ghazal of modern Classic is Insha Ji Uthoo. He did a lot of work in Urdu literature his major works are: Is Basti Key Ik Koochay Main (Poetry) Dil-e-Wehshi (Poetry) Chand Nagar (Poetry) Khumar e Gandum (Humor) Urdu Ki Aakhri Kitaab (Humor) Duniya Gol hay (Travelogue) Awara Gard Ki Diary (Travelogue) Nagri Nagri Phira Musafar (Travelogue) Ibn-e-Battuta Kay Ta’qub Main (Travelogue) Chaltay Ho Tou Cheen Ko Chaliye (Travelogue) Khat Insha Jee Kay (Collection of letters) Insha spent most of his time in Karachi. He died on 11 January, 1978 in London and was buried in Karachi.

A tribute to ‘old men’ of letters

Karachi, recently assembled Urdu writers from all over the world to discuss ways to live longer, Mr. Right said. Mr. Najmul Hassan Rizvi said, “It was a perfect setting for a conference that devoted a full day to the memory of Mir Taqi Mir, the oldest man of Urdu poetry who has been ruling the ghazal for almost three centuries.” Mr. Right remarked, “Mir Sahib is a living tradition of Urdu ghazal.” And further Mr. Right said, “The event was a hat-trick for the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi that is striving to revive the cultural life of the city which was plagued by violence and strife in the recent past.” Mr. Najmul Hassan Rizvi said, “Our younger generation has a lot of distractions. And those who have opted to become writers need due recognition. As a result, many of our ‘new’ writers are still called ‘young’ even after turning 50 or 60.” “The situation can improve definitely if the standard of education in Urdu is raised and the language is given its due status as demanded by the participants of the conference through a resolution,” Mr. Right said. “I was really impressed by the old guards of Urdu literature who came to attend the event despite bad health.”
